Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates!

And thanks very much to the anonymous person who gave me the gift on my LJ profile!

Okay, house is clean, food is acquired, friend who is staying with us will be coming tonight, books all mailed. Now back to writing! (No, I’m not done with the new book yet. It’s getting there. I think I’m on the second to last chapter.)

Writing is in fact the riskiest thing I’ve ever done professionally. I put a piece of myself on each page and send it out into the world: to readers, to editors, to…

New post at the Night Bazaar: Martha Wells: My Last Year
This year, 2011, was supposed to be my last year as a writer. In January of 2010, I was in a really bad place. It had been five years since my last new fantasy novel, three years since my last published book. This is the post where I talk about how I had planned to give up professional writing in 2010. I think I’ve mentioned it before but not really gone into detail.

Contest winners: All the Wheel of the Infinites were mailed…

I’m having some trouble accessing LJ today, so hopefully this will get through:

I’ve drawn the contest winners, and since it’s Christmas and why not, I drew seven instead of three. There were 69 entries from LJ, DW, and Google+. I wrote down everyone’s id on slips of paper, put them in the ceramic pot of random drawings and jumbled them around a lot, and then drew.

And the winners are:

queenoftheskies,

shoeless_girl, David Zampa,

copernica3, Mad…

Got a surprise this morning: It looks like the kindle version of The Cloud Roads is FREE on Amazon this morning, so if you have an eReader and haven’t already got it, this might be a good time. I didn’t know the publisher was going to do this as a promo, or I would have given you guys a head’s up.

The winners of the hardcover signed copies of Wheel of the Infinite are: odo, tingler, fantasycafe, avidreadergirl, drstur, ladyjax. (I decided to throw in an extra copy, so there were six…

I feel like I got zero sleep last night, though I’m mostly conscious now so I must have gotten some. At some point I was woken up by a loud noise that sounded like it was inside the house. It sounded like a cabinet door slamming closed. I got up, walked around, didn’t find anything. Troyce didn’t hear it, though he did hear mysterious noises (talking and music) early this morning that I didn’t hear. Clearly, the house is haunted and we just didn’t notice before. Or something.

#books of the raksura #raksura #the serpent sea

Still plugging away on third Books of the Raksura book, which really needs a title.

Wednesday night we went to see A Tuna Christmas on campus, performed by the two original actors/writers, and had a great time. I’ve seen all of the Tuna plays live now. It’s neat that most of the main characters are women, and that Joe Sears is so good at playing them that I forget that Bertha and Pearl are not actually women.

As of yesterday I’m about 105,000 words into the third Books of the Raksura, the one set after The Serpent Sea, probably with about 15,000 words to go. It’s been going very slowly, but I really want to finish it by Christmas. Then I’d be on track for finishing a book a year since 2007. Not all of those books have sold to publishers, but still, they’re finished. :)

Coming up on the end of this year, I’m in a much better place in my career/life than I’ve been since about 2004. I had a book…
